Is your pet suffering from arthritis, chronic pain or pain following a major surgical procedure?  Help is at hand.

Here at the Belmont Vet Centre we aim to offer your pet the very best of care to extend the duration and quality of their life.  With this goal in mind we have recently acquired a revolutionary new piece of equipment that enables us to stay at the cutting edge of pain relief for your pet.

Our new McLaren Photonic torch is providing our patients with an additional and safe form of pain relief.  This light-based therapy is useful for most painful conditions including relief from arthritic pain and chronic or acute pain following major surgical procedures.

From the earliest of times, when primitive man worshipped the sun, (1500 BC the Rig Veda, a Sanskrit document from India), through the histories of the ancient Greeks and Romans, one can find references to the healing powers of light.

Some Background Information

The McLaren Photonic Torch was developed in 2003 and is based on information developed by Dr. Brian McLaren who has studied in depth the scientific reason for how light stimulates tissue.

Dr McLaren is a clinical scientist, a veterinary surgeon and the highest qualified acupuncturist in Australia with postgraduate university qualifications in both veterinary and human acupuncture.

Photonic therapy is intended to provide a simple to use, safe healing process, through the use of single wavelength light to stimulate the healing processes of the body at the cellular level.  To put it simply, it is the scientific application of light to specific acupuncture point to activate or produce particular physiological results.

Skin comprises of about 16% of the body's weight and is the largest organ in the body.  It has 3 main functions

§  Sensory - telling you when you have been touched, where the touch occurred and whether the touch was hot or cold.

§  Thermoregulatory - regulating the body's need for warmth or coolness by conserving heat or releasing heat.

§  Protection - helping you to know when an injury has occurred.

These functions are responded to by the brain through connective tissue under the skin that transfers stimulation of the skin into electrical impulses that travel through the nervous system to the brain.

It was the Ancient Chinese who discovered this intricate system and created the system of acupuncture points that are used today.  It is upon these acupuncture points that the McLaren Photonic 'Therapy system relies.

Acupuncture points are areas of skin that have increased electrical activity and when stimulated they cause the brain to release a variety of neuro-chemicals that aid the body in healing.

  • Photonic therapy used before and after an operation reduces the time of wound healing and decrease post operative infection
  • Photonic therapy is used in a treatment regime which consists of stimulating the acupuncture point for 5-10 seconds per point, two or three times a week
  • It is virtually impossible to over stimulate a point and stimulating an incorrect point will not cause harm

The full course of treatment consists of 9 individual sessions, which take about 20 minutes per session.  For best results we treat three times a week for three consecutive weeks.  McLaren Photonic Therapy can be used in conjunction with other methods of pain relief including medications.

We have been absolutely amazed by the results of our patients so far.  The laser therapy can even reduce the amount of pain relieving medication that your pet requires, saving money and stress.  When compared to traditional pain relieving drugs you will see that McLaren therapy is extremely cost effective.
