With all the rapid advances you hear about in the news with genetic testing, veterinary medicine has been making advances of its own. We now are able to offer a wide number of tests for many different reasons. These vary from testing for safety of certain medications to detecting viruses to finding out if your pet is carrying mutations that put them at risk of certain diseases. With the publicity surrounding dangerous dogs, pit bulls and breed certification, there is another test we can run that helps distinguish which breeds may have contributed to your unique furry family member.

Of course the different reasons and different tests make it a complicated situation and discussing this with one of our vets can help make sure the right tests get run for your pet. Two of our standard options include:

-         - Hereditary diseases: There are many diseases that can be passed from parents to offspring, and these often have specific genetic markers that can be tested for. There are tests available for both dogs and cats.

-         - Breed identification: Different breeds of dog have different genetic markers that can be tested for, and this gives much more information about the parentage of an animal than just looking at it. Currently this test is only available for dogs.
